Whether renovating an ensuite or designing a guest bath from scratch, consider white your friend. I believe it to not only be a forgiving foundation, but a timeless and calming aesthetic as well.
It seems that a common misconception with white bathrooms is that they are boring, stark, or even sterile. I admit that when not styled right, it can certainly seem that way. Being precise in what you want will help guide you in the right direction, towards a thoughtfully designed and balanced space.
A bathroom, like any other room in your home, needs to reflect your taste and preferences. For me, I’d want the primary bathroom to emulate the essence of a 5-star hotel room and spa. As such, I love the idea of a white and timeless aesthetic, with touches of glamour and a calming essence.
To create a calm and inviting space, I would suggest adding some depth by mixing whites of cool and warm undertones. For example, try crisp white tiles for walls, creamy white cabinetry, and soft eggshell paint for balance. This layered look creates more of an elevated appeal.
When layering textures, I would also suggest keeping the following in mind:
- Incorporate a variety to avoid a flat one-dimensional look
- Pair matte and glossy finishes, i.e. glossy tiles with a matte countertop
- Layer with softer materials (i.e. herringbone or waffle linens) for subtle elegance
- For an extra element of privacy, consider a minimal textured glass for your windows
- Avoid a stark contrast by adhering to a calming monochrome palette
- Include a low-maintenance, humidity-loving plant (i.e. pothos or ferns) for a fresh and serene touch of greenery
- Play with your hardware, i.e. satin nickel faucets with chrome towel hooks and/or bars
- Add warmth with natural accents, such as wood or stone
Whether it’s an ensuite or guest bathroom, you really can’t go wrong when you start with white. Regardless of your aesthetic, building from layers of white and neutrals adds flexibility and a timeless sense of calm. Pairing with thoughtful design elements will create a space that’ll grow with you and be loved throughout the years to come.
